Pedro Álvares Cabral [ca. 1468 -- ca. 1520] explored northeastern Brazil because he sighted Brazilian land while on the way to India. He and his navigators ventured too far westwards from their southerly route along the west African coast. They did so in their attempts to avoid doldrums and calm pockets in the eastern Atlantic off Africa. On April 21, 1500 he first sighted Brazil. On that date, he viewed and named Monte Pascoal. On April 22 he set foot on land at Porto Seguro, 39 miles [62 kilometers] south of Monte Pascoal. He explored the area from then until the day of his departure. On May 3rd, he resumed his voyage to India.
The year 1500 was the date of Cabral's voyage for Portugal. Pedro Álvares Cabral [c. 1468 - c. 1520] sailed in that year under the patronage of King Manuel I of Portugal [May 31, 1469-December 13, 1521]. He was born in Belmonte in eastern Portugal and was related to the royal line through his mother, Isabel de Gouveia de Queirós [c. 1433 - c. 1483]. His mother was descended from the first King of Portugal, Afonso I [ca. 1109-December 6, 1185].
