Charles Warren conducted excavations at Jericho (also known as Tell es-Sultan) in 1868. He discovered the Bronze Age city wall, although did not recognise it as such and missed a Neolithic stone tower (later uncovered by Kathleen Kenyon) by only a metre. He concluded there was nothing more to be found at the site.
