Charles Warren conducted excavations at Jericho (also known as Tell es-Sultan) in 1868. He discovered the Bronze Age city wall, although did not recognise it as such and missed a Neolithic stone tower (later uncovered by Kathleen Kenyon) by only a metre. He concluded there was nothing more to be found at the site.

A:Like many ancient cities, Jericho had been built up in layers one on top of each other, with the most recent occupation on top of the resulting mound, or tell. The first excavations of the site were made by Charles Warren in 1868. Several other digs took place over the years, and extensive investigations using more modern techniques were made by Kathleen Kenyon between 1952 and 1958. She di not discover the Jericho of the biblical Joshua because the site had been abandoned at that time.
