After living in caves, the Maori people started building fortified villages called pa, typically located on hills for defense. These pa were constructed using palisades and earthworks and became the main form of settlement for the Maori.

He and the Hurons crossed Lake Ontario, traveled south through western New York attempting to avoid the Senecas, and into northwestern PA. Thence east to the Susquehannock villages on the N. Br. Susquehanna River near present day Athens. Purpose was to amass a force with the Susquehannocks to assault the Iroquois villages at Onondaga. The group was delayed in their journey to Onondaga, and missed the designated meeting time with Champlain, with whom they were to join forces. Brule then spent perhaps a year with the Susquehannocks, during which time he supposedly explored the entire Susquehanna River downstream to it's mouth at Chesapeake Bay, and perhaps through the length of the bay and gained sight of the Atlantic. Shortly after leaving the Susquehannock villages and heading back for Canada, he was captured by the Senecas, either in northwestern PA or western New York.
Before Lewis met up with Clark, he began the expedition on August 30, 1803 in Pittsburgh PA. Lt. William Clark would offer to join Lewis on the expedition weeks later on October 13, 1803 at Camp Dubois (in present-day Indiana). In spring 1805, they continued to the headwaters of the Missouri River, struggled across the Continental Divide, and headed west along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia Rivers to the Pacific. They landed at the mouth of the Columbia River, Astoria, Oregon. The expedition then ended on September 23, 1806 upon their return to St. Louis from Oregon. So the expedition took about 3 years.
Meadowcroft (South of Pittsburgh, PA) contains very old Pre-Clovis artifacts. The layers of remains at this site start in the 1960's and continue down for almost 17,000 years in a sequencial fashion. There is a huge, on-going debate about when people first populated North America and where they came from. A "traditional" view holds that the Clovis people were the first Indians. They were here roughly 10,000 years ago. The Meadowcroft site yielded some unexpected results ... very old dates (much older than 10k years) that were used to support other alternative theories about pre-clovis settling of the Americas. Cool site. Very much worth the visit.
