The first people on Long Island were the Native Americans. They may have arrived as early as twelve thousand years ago. They were still here when Verrazano sailed into New York Harbor in 1524. The prehistoric Indians Long Island left no written records. Except the dawn of of historical times, we do not know the names of the Indian Tribes or what languages they speek. The information here is mostly based on archaeological studies.
