I don't now if they wanted to "explore". Thomas Jefferson, the president at that time (the third pres.) picked them because he had just brought the Louisiana Territory from the Spanish, who were offering $15 million. (They needed the money because they had spent lots of their money on the war.. ((offered by Napoleon btw))..). So, President Jefferson appointed them to go explore the land he had just bought. They took others who had good wildlife skills, and Clark brought along his African-American slave, York, who helped a lot. On the way, they met Sacagawea and other Indians (Oto, Missouri, etc..). They went to explore to look for the Northwest passage and to see what was beyond the Mississippi River. (They found lots of animals, ones they never saw in the East, prairie dogs, etc.) They also met Indians. If Sacagawea wasn't there with her son, they would have probably gotten killed. When a woman & child was there with the Americans, the Indians found that they werent a threat or a war party. due to this, the Indians guided them on their way.

Hope I helped!!!!
