At first, Chinese traders used to call it "MAI"(ma-ee). When Ferdinand Magellan discovered it, he called it archipelago of St. Lazarus/archipelago of St. Lazaro because on the day he first stepped in the Philippines, it was St. Lazarus' feast day. After several years of conquering the Philippines, he named it Philippines to honor king Philip II of Spain. Filipinas, on the other hand, is the Tagalog/Filipino translation of the English word Philippines. It was recognized and declared as Philippines(feely-phins) by the Americans and Spaniards as well.(the Americans followed after the Spanish occupation in the Philippines for 333 years)

Some suggests lots of name for the Philippines. Even more bizzare was the idea that it was part of atlantis which was supposedly sunked. The earliest RECORDED name of the Philippines was Ma'yi, which was what the Chinese called this country during barter trade. after that we were discovered by the Spaniards and renamed "isalas de san lazaro" then after that "islas de felipe" then Philippines came ---Well, in some maps today that shows the Philippines before Magellan arrived names the Philippines as Malaya, or maybe the Malayan Archipelago, with the islands of Indonesia and Malaysia, as the Philippines was a part of the chain of islands that mostly occupy Southeast Asia.
