I have come across this exact problem myself and YES, when the car does not initially start and the engine keeps cranking - STOP attempting to turn the engine (ignition) on. One MUST turn the key to the on or start position furthest to the point where the key springs back and allow the SECURITY light to blink until it stops blinking. This usually takes anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes and possibly even longer. Regardless of how long it actually takes before the SECURITY light to stop flashing, one MUST wait that time out before he/she can switch the key to the OFF position then once again try to attempt the start of the engine.
Good luck to all those with this issue.
IF YOUR BATTERY DIES This worked for me too. My battery went dead and after a boost and several other things the car would still not start. I then tried the above and it started right away. I believe with the PASSLOCK II TM system the resistance of the key must be read before the car will start. Thanks for the advice DD
You can't bypass or reset security system, bring it to the dealer.
I don't think you can bypass them.
First thing that I would do is check the battery. The clicking sound is the selenoid on the starter. Usually that means the starter is bad. Isn't very hard to replace. Hope this helped.
is there spark to the plugs? is there fuel to the injectors? timing correct? check these things in order and deal with each one to find the answer. too many variables at this point, need to narrow it down
All O2 sensors all threaded into the exhaust system at various points.
how do you fix security switch on a 2002 oldsmobile alero
IF YOUR BATTERY DIES I found the answer to this under Alero 2002 security system will not let you start the car with out leaving key on for 10 minutes then you turn the key off then it will start?and this worked for me too. My battery went dead and after a boost and several other things the car would still not start. I then tried the above (key in the ignition and turned to the on position for 10 - 15 minutes or until "Security" stops flashing on the instrument cluster) and it started right away. I believe with the PASSLOCK II TM system the resistance of the key must be read before the car will start. Thanks for the advice DD

I wouldn't fix it if i was you.....I have a 2000 alero, and the security system (passlock) keeps it from starting often, and it seems to be a big problem with them. So if your security system isn't working but the car is running fine I wouldn't mess with it..
If you're talking about on 01 Alero that's easy. Put the key in and turn it to the on position leave it for 10 minutes and then take the key out leave it for about 5 seconds and then try starting it. Note: make sure the security light has quit flashing on the dashboard. My alero has done this several times, and I've had friends try it in grand am's and this works too. it has something to do with resetting the system. Hope this helps you out.
Put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on position. Leave in this position for ten minutes. Turn key to off then to start. This should reset the security and the car should start right up.
That means your security system door lock is acting up. Pretty much you have to take it down to a delear
Turn the key to "on" and let it sit for approx 10 minutes until the 'security' light stops flashing. Turn to off and start as normal.
When your security light comes on and your car will not start, turn you key to the on position and wait 10 minutes. The light will go off and you need to turn the key to the off position, then restart your car.
It's probably related to your security system. If that's the case you'll need to take it to a dealer to get it cleared up. I found out after countless hours of working on my sister's Alero that they're Oldsmobile's version of the Edsel.
It probably won't start
I've had this problem where I couldn't start my car and it turns out it was because the security light was on. To fix it: Place the key in the ignition and turn it one rotation (so battery is on) then leave it in the ignition for 10 minutes. Restart car and security light will be off.... also car will start!
