Why were relics removed from the catacombs?

Most relics were made out of valuable materials, such as gold other precious metals. Plus collectors pay top dollar for such items which increases the value even more. Then the governments started to protect the relics by placing armed guards in areas where the potential to loot risk was high. This didn't stop the thieves as then they would burrow under the sacred buildings to retrieve such items. They would dig so many tunnels under these buildings, that most would become unstable and unable to be entered do to collapsing.
