Foremost, the defining characteristic of the entire phylum are the joint appendages and can easily form the starting point for classification. The more detailed structure of the appendages does help classify many if not most subcategories. For example, the biramous (branching) appendages distinguish the crustaceans from others. The count of appendages also helps classify some, like myriapods. The three pairs defines hexapods like the insects, and ten for the decapoda order, like crabs and lobsters. Mouthparts are also used to describe categories. Chelicerata, maxillipoda, chilopoda, branchiopods and others are defined based on appendage position, type, or count.
