I am diabietic and as well as a tattoo artist. It doesn't bother me and hasn't bothered any clients that I am aware of. Some people are allergic to red pigment under the skin and will have a reaction to it. Being diabetic should not matter, just take extra care of your tattoo and keep it clean.

Diabetics and TattoosI am a diabetic and I recently got a tattoo. I talked to my doctor, they said tattoos are fine for diabetics. The only place they don't reccommend a tattoo is on your legs, because diabetics later on in life are more prone to have bad circulation in legs. (While true, the bad circulation should have no real affect on your tattoo if it has been there prior to your bad circulation. You are NOT advised to get a tattoo if you already have bad circulation in your legs - I have a tattoo on each ankle, no problems whatsoever.)

The only thing to consider is that the pain and trauma inflicted on your body will cause your blood sugar to drop. They tell every one getting a tattoo to eat before, so I guess just eat before, maybe keep some candy near by or a soda and pay attention to how your feeling, you may have to take frequent breaks.

AnswerOkay, I am 22 years old, and I have been a diabetic since i was 12. I researched getting a tattoo and decided to go ahead and do it. I got from my shoulder to my elbow done, and it completely healed fine. This is my point, if you are controlling your blood sugar, you should have no reason to be worried because you would heal like any other person. Now say you weren't taking care of yourself and not taking care of your tattoo like a normal person, yes you are going to risk having complications. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER PERSON. The key is to have you blood sugars under control and bring a soda just in case you do get hypoglycemic. which i didn't. But all this mumbo jumbo about oh no diabetics cant get tattoos because they don't heal as fast and are more prone to infection, don't believe that. Understand that controlling your blood sugar is the key to a quick recovery like any other person without Diabetes. Keep it clean and use ointment cream. I've been a type 1 diabetic since i was 12 so 10 years.

No. That is not the only thing to consider.

Diabetics heal differently, especially any areas below the line of the heart on the body. Due to restricted circulation. Your tattoo artist will be able to tell you this. It is not always good to get a tattoo being diabetic. Please consult your doctor and always let your artist know about any current medical conditions like this or an allergy before you get ink done, it could mean your life.

You also need to be aware of the cleanliness of the tatoo place. Do they use needles more than once? Is the place clean? If the tatoo artist has long hair, do they tie it back? Things like that. Let your physician know what you are planning and they can recommend it or suggest you not get one. You will have to have a hepatitis check shortly after you get the tatoo. This is for your protection and is a simple blood test.

I got a tatoo a few years ago. I have been a diabetic since 1977. I had no problems but as stated above, you need to be very, very careful. My tatoo was a medical alert -- a cadueus with the word diabetic above it. Now that I aged (gracefully, of course), I'll need to have Type 1 tatooed above the "diabetic."

Answer 2

I am 15 have had diabetes sice 8 i got a tattoo on my left shoulder blade this year i healed up nicely and has not affected me in anyway

Follow up question:

I've been asking myself the same thing. However unlike you, I haven't been as diligent with my sugar. So when I get tiny cuts or wounds they leave dark marks behind when they heal. I'm concerned that if I get inked it will turn out ugly because of this. Any comments/suggestions?

Answer 3

I've gotten three tattoos over the years, and never thought about bloodsugars affecting anything. In retrospect, however, the one tattoo I got when I wasn't taking care of myself (A1c of 15) got infected several times and didn't heal cleanly. My last tattoo had an A1c of under 8, and healed perfectly in a matter of days. So yeah, bloodsugars have a huge impact on healing. The better the bloodsugars, the cleaner the tattoo.

Also, my bloodsugar isn't affected AT ALL during the process. I have a continuous glucose monitoring system that I've check every couple minutes during my sessions, and my glucose levels don't vascilate at all because of the tattooing process.

It is generally safe to get a tattoo even if you are diabetic but make sure your artist knows because there can sometimes be complications with healing. Some diabetics are on blood thinners and in that case you cannot get tattooed however if you do not take blood thinners you should be good to go!

Yes people with diabetes can get tattoos. It is advised thought that you check with your doctor first. Diabetics have a high risk for infection and have to be extremely careful about tattoo aftercare. But if you are willing to take very good care and follow the tattoo-ists professional advice about after care then you should have no problems what-so-ever. I have been a diabetic for going on 7 years now and also do tattoos. So what ever you do be safe and keep it clean.

Yes, no problem, it does not break the skin. You can still be allergic to henna and have a reaction, but diabetes has nothing to do with it.

Yes. I have type II diabetes, and I have several tattoos. As long as you are controlling your diabetes, it shouldn't be a problem.
