Exercise is very important for people with Arthritis and swimming is a fantastic exercise because it is low impact on joints. As long as you aren't doing anything that is too painful it should be very helpful to keep moving.
Lifting weights or other exercise will not reduce arthritis however it can be beneficial in strengthening supporting muscles thereby reducing pain and wear and tear on the joint in question. One should take care however that the right exercises are done to help the condition.
