Your ceiling may have been oil based, or really anything other than latex. If you used latex primer over oil then there is really nothing you can do except remove it and get a super low gloss oil base.

Primer is almost always the exciting color of light gray, so if you're painting with a light color, you should stick with the gray. Primer could theoretically come in any color, but gray is what you'll nearly always see used.
