Can you colour over the black outlines in a tattoo?

Well yeh, but if you want it to really stand out black outlining is best..

Everything in tattooing needs contrast, put a very dark blue next to a very dark purple and look at it quick and you really might see just one dark blur. Put a black line thru the colors to separate them and it is more identifiable, put a line and some negative space between them and OOh-la-la they sing out their color....

The only place you do not see much outlining at all is in portrait work where an outline might be used to show the eyelids and maybe the lip.......TatuBaron

You can get black tattoos, however due to fading and aging the black ink will appear a light greenish after time.

You can get tattoos in only color. The problem with these kinds of tattoos are: 1) The design has got to be very broad, i.e. barely any detail. Tattoo artists use outlining to keep the design sharp. Without an outline, you may run in to problems with the visibility of the details in the tattoo; and 2) All tattoos fade. Colors fade more than black fades. The lighter the color, the sooner it fades. An all color tattoo would need to be touched up more often than a black one.

Don't get me wrong. All color tattoos can be a beautiful. Discuss it with your artist.

Yea, but if it is a lighter pigment the lines will show through. The only color that will cover the lines with no fight at all is more black.
