Edvard Grieg attended the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, where he studied from 1858 to 1862. At the conservatory, he honed his skills in composition and piano, which significantly influenced his later works. Grieg's time in Leipzig exposed him to various musical styles and traditions, shaping his unique voice as a composer.
As Edvard Munch grew older, his art evolved to reflect a deeper exploration of existential themes and personal introspection. While his earlier works, like "The Scream," focused on raw emotions and psychological turmoil, his later pieces incorporated more symbolism and a softer palette, often depicting nature and the passage of time. Munch's later style also embraced a sense of tranquility and acceptance, moving away from the intense angst of his youth. This shift illustrates his personal growth and changing perspectives on life and mortality.
Symbolist painter Edvard Munch has said that The Scream represented the "infinite scream of nature." In an interview with Sue Prideaux, Munch recalled a time when he was on the verge of madness, and, as he walked with friends, the sun set in a sky that was nearly blood red. Exhausted, he felt an overwhelming anxiety. He said, "You know my picture, The Scream? I was stretched to the limit - nature was screaming in my blood... After that I gave up hope of ever being able to love again." Munch, born on December 12, 1863, created several versions of the painting, which were part of a series of works he called The Frieze of Life - A Poem About Life, Love and Death.
It is considered to be part of the Expressionist School of painting. When speaking about art the word style usually refers to shared characteristics between pieces made during the same time period. The work is expressionistic in style with bold diagonals and sharp lines, the feeling is communicated quite effectively. Edvard Munch actually did a painting and a woodcut print by the same name.
