No you dont have to, but when you do soak it in soda ash before dying the shirt it will completely hold all the color in. When you dont only a small portion of the color stays in the shirt fibers.
It takes about 24 hours to the tye dye shirt to dry.
I assume you're talking about tie dying. If you're worried about the dye soaking through from one side of the shirt to the other, you can place a piece of cardboard covered with plastic wrap between the front and back of the shirt. If you want an area that resists the dye, to that when you wash the dye out there are areas that have not been dyed, then you need to use a dye resist. There are many kinds, soy, wax, and water based. Water based is the easiest to use but you have to be careful to add dye a little at a time. Flooding the dye piece will wash the resist off too soon. Elmer's blue gel glue is a simple dye resist (make sure it dries for 24 hours before you dye) as are fabric paints (set them with heat before you dye). Also, you cannot soak something with water based dyes in a soda ash presoak. I soak my shirts and then let them dry and then add the water based dye resist. Hope that helps!
You first buy purple dye, from like Walmart or something, and then you put the shirt(s) in the washer, then pour the dye in, don't pour the WHOLE thing in though, unless you want to...
Yes, by the neck until dead.
Yes, pre-soaking a t-shirt in soda ash helps the fabric to better absorb and retain the dye during the tie-dye process. This increases the vibrancy and longevity of the colors on the shirt.
You use cold water to do this. First, soak the shirt in white vinegar to set the dye so it doesn't bleed.

Follow the instructions on the dye packaging to mix the dye and prepare your workspace. Use different application methods such as folding, twisting, or using stencils to create patterns on the shirt. Allow the dye to set according to the instructions, then rinse and wash the shirt to reveal your unique design.
Yes, soda ash is typically used as a pre-treatment to prepare the fabric for dyeing. Soaking the shirt in a soda ash solution helps the dye to bond with the fabric and creates more vibrant and long-lasting colors. Be sure to follow the instructions on the dye package for best results.

To dye geodes, you can soak them in a dye solution made with water and fabric dye. Make sure the geodes are clean and dry before placing them in the dye solution. Let them soak for a few hours or until they reach the desired color intensity. Rinse them thoroughly with water afterwards.
