elect ingiction gone bad
With the flywheel spinning at about 1,000 RPM at idle, the starter, if engaged with the flywheel, would be forced to spin between 15,000 and 20,000 RPM. Once the engine has turned over and is running, the overrun clutch will release the starter from the flywheel and prevent the gears from re-meshing (as in an accidental turning of the ignition key) while the engine is running
Check first for a runnability problem eg: tuneup etc. A/C is a strain on a smaller motor (I'm assuming a 4 cylinder, older vintage as you gave no info.) and if it's not running right in the first place, turning on the A/C will make it worse.
Check for a bad ground
The crankcase is located behind the engine and to the right. Next to the battery. Since the model of your 1982 Volkswagen Beetle the crankcase has been moved to the left next to the turning signal fluid. This has caused many issues with the fluid running into the crankcase. When changing the ventilation tube you must first disconnect it and then blow very hard on the end of it to make sure no fluid or dirt has been clogging it up. Since this is a positive crankcase and not a negative one make sure to not get frustrated while doing this process as this may make your crankcase negative and that will cause more problems down the road.
This can be caused by the washers that hold the engine are loose or worn down, causing extra vibration when the car is running. Not too expensive to fix but involves taking the engine out and replacing the springs on the washers.
