The symbolic meaning of the Last Supper is that Christ was showing his disciples how they were to remember him. There were to hold on regular occasions what we now call The Sacrament, done mostly on Sundays. Which included the breaking of bread in remembrance of his body and the drinking of water or unfermented wine in remembrance of the blood he spilt. It is also at this sacred time that we have the opportunity to renew the covenants we have made with him.

Jesus knew that He was going to offer Himself as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of the world. He was going to do it at this particular Passover. In John 1:35, John the Baptist made the comment when he sees Jesus passing by, "Behold the Lamb of God."

On Passover, the original, in Egypt a perfect lamb was slain and the blood was applied to the door posts of the houses the Israeli's were living in. When God saw the blood on the door post He passed over them, (Whereas there was no blood on the Egyptian houses and they, the first born were killed).

It had been decided in time past that Jesus would offer Himself up like a lamb to save any who would accept Him and the time would be an appointed Passover when lambs are offered up to God as sacrifices.

Unbeknown to anyone except Jesus this Passover meal would be the last supper He would spend with His disciples on earth. hence we call this last meal that Jesus had with His disciples the "Last Supper".
