He lead a group of artists called the fauvists.

The fauvist rejected traditional painting and sculpture ideals and emphasized modern concepts, notably machines and motion. Inspired by the late impressionist works of Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh who pushed the boundaries with their bold color choices, the movement took this idea a step further to include simplified design.

The French word "fauves," means the wild beasts, and that title was appropriate because of their use of uncontrolled, abrasive, and intense colors. == ==

His painting method changed throughout his long career, but perhaps he is best known for his thin application of paint and luminous color. It is a fact that Matisse would alter paintings over a period of time. Somehow he could still maintain a paint surface that looks as thin and fresh as if it were painted in one session.
