If you are thinking of agents and the like, you should remember this was the 15th century, not the 21st.

Leonardo had to fend for himself.

His father, Piero, was a wealthy notary (who would be a lawyer today), and helped Leonardo by getting him an apprenticeship with the famous Verrocchio in Florence. He also took Leo into his household and treated him well, until he had other sons (heirs) by a different mother.

Leo was to have other problems along the way.....

(Leonardo had to sue those half-brothers in court to regain what his father had given to him. )
