Potassium when released from the cytosol of the autonomic cells (SA AV nodes) into the ECF decreases the slope of the spontaneous depolerization and a hyperpolerization of the membrane potential such that the threshold for an action potential is reached more slowly. The frequency of action potentials is thereby decreased. Decreasing the action potential frequency decreases the speed of impulse conduction, which increases the delay of conduction between atria and ventricles and lengthens the time required for impulse to travel through ventricles. As a result the duration of systole (isovolumeric contraction) increases.

Why is sodium and potassium so important to our heart rate?

Sodium is important for our daily survival. It helps to transport vital nutrients around the body, send nerve messages, and contract muscles. The problem is that most of us eat far more sodium than we really need to. ** This excess sodium, above the Upper Limit of 2300 mg/day results in an increase in blood pressure, which consequently makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body, leads to an increased heart rate.

Potassium on the other hand acts to counteract Sodium in terms of blood pressure, and heart rate. A diet high in Potassium acts to lower an individuals blood pressure, causing a decreased heart rate

yes it absolutely does.

If the amount of sodium is too high in your body then your heart will beat a bit faster and your bp will raise.

If your potassium level is low then your heart can not function properly and the heart rate will drop down.

Excess potassium can cause hyperkalemia which is associated with renal failure, severe dehydration and shock. The heart rate slows down to such an extent that it fails to transmit electrochemical impulses needed to mediate the heartbeat. This can eventually lead to death.
