There is a system of tidal buoys that are designed to detect tsunamis before they hit the shore, but a tsunami caused by an earthquake along the coast would hit the beach before any alarm could be given.

What is the risk of Yellowknife getting earthquakes?

Why is it necessary to understand earthquakes?

Predicting earthquakes would enable people to prepare for them. As with any natural disaster it is best to come into the situation prepared. Would you rather your stove caught fire at midnight while you were asleep or would you rather that it caught fire while you were holding a fire extinguisher standing directly in front of it? Areas that have frequent earthquakes (like alaska ad california) are built to withstand normal earthquakes and cause minimal damage in a large earthquake. Places that rarely get earthquakes however are built with little regard to earthquakes as they are so uncommon. In Texas for example there are many "spaghetti roads" that loop through the sky and intertwine. If these road systems were built somewhere like Alaska they would probably collapse within 5 years of their construction if they were ever even finished. The Alaska pipeline is built to withstand sudden horizontal movement of more than 30 feet if a fault were to horizontally split open beneath one section of it (ground on one side of fault moving quickly East, ground on the other side moving quickly West for example)

Why there are so many earthquakes in japan?

Japan is a peninsala so it is prone to earthquakes because, the land often rubs against the undersea floor, and so the vibrations cause the plates of the earth to be softer and more loose, which results in the area around Japan to be prone to the plates of the earth buckling, therefore resulting in a highert chance of earthquakes.

How do meteoroligest predict a tsunami?

The only way that we humans can predict tsunamis is just about the same as the way we predict the earthquakes that cause them. The Quake releases p-waves that are extremely fast and non-destructive, before the main S-waves and Rayleigh waves do the damage. Places with alarms like Japan will usually detect these and give a warning that's up to a minute and a half in advance for huge earthquakes. It's enough time to shut off gas, elevators, etc. and often enough time for people to get to safety if they are prepared and don't panic.

How can tsunamis be predicted?

Tsunamis are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that cause tremors in the earth in/under/near the ocean. These events can trigger massive waves when they leave the deep water and approach land. So, if there's a large earthquake or volcanic eruption somewhere near the ocean, it's usually a sure bet that you will see increased wave size, perhaps even tsunamis, on adjacent coasts.

What day it a next earthquick?

I don't have the ability to predict when earthquakes will occur. Earthquakes happen randomly and are impossible to forecast accurately. It's essential to always be prepared and have a plan in place for natural disasters.
