A substance called plaque can build up on the inner walls of the artery causing blockage that does not allow blood to flow through easily. Plaque consists of a variety of substances, including calcium, fat, cholesterol and cellular waste.

When fat builds up in the arteries it hardens into what is called plaque. Cholesterol is a way the amount of fat is measured in the blood stream. When plaque builds up in the arteries, it restricts the amount of blood that flows throw the arteries. When blood flow is restricted it lowers the oxygen in the blood that vital organs are needing, this causes strokes and heart attacks due to the lack of oxygen the brain and heart are receiving.

The fatty deposits of cholesterol within the artery wall are known as atherosclerotic plaque or atheromatous plaque. It is divided into three different components -

1) The atheroma, the nodular accumulation of soft, flaky, yellowish material, composed primarily of spent macrophages nearest the lumen of the artery

2) Underlying areas of cholesterol crystals

3) Calcification at the outer base of older/more advanced lesions.

The 'atheroma', as it is also known, which is comprised of cells (mainly macrophage cells), cell debris, lipids (cholesterol and fatty acids), calcium and a variable amount of fibrous connective tissue.

If/when one of these plaques ruptures, to due structural collapse, it causes a clot in the artery, leading to a heart attack, cardiac arrest, or stroke.
