thanks how many holding blots and where

bad bendix (starter drive) if the spring in the starter bendix is weak or broken it will not engage the flywheel; but the starter will turn normally. bad thing is ,you have to pull the starter..good luck..

What does the starter pinion gear engage to crank the engine?

Usually, the engine flywheel. A solenoid in the starter moves the starter pinion shaft forward (or backward depending on how it is mounted to the engine) to engage the outside edge of the flywheel (which has teeth to match the pinion gear).

What is the purpose of the overrunning clutch in a starter?

With the flywheel spinning at about 1,000 RPM at idle, the starter, if engaged with the flywheel, would be forced to spin between 15,000 and 20,000 RPM. Once the engine has turned over and is running, the overrun clutch will release the starter from the flywheel and prevent the gears from re-meshing (as in an accidental turning of the ignition key) while the engine is running

What are four functions of flywheel?

Inertial mass (assist smaller engines by storing and releasing torque on take-off) Vibration dampening (the make-up of the flywheel also lends itself to dampening) Power transfer (this is how the power is transferred from the crank to the transmission) Engine starting (this is where the starter teeth engage the flywheel ring gear)

Should the starter gears be in contact with the fly wheel before engaging the starter?

Absolutely not. The starter gear must fully disengage the flywheel gears when you release the starter. Otherwise when the engine starts the starter will continue to be turned by the engine.

Does the 1992 Nissan Sentra have a starter or an alternator?

This vehicle (like most cars) has both a starter and an alternator. The alternator is driven by a serpentine belt, and the starter is located on the lower part of the engine at the transmission, where the teeth engage with the flywheel/flex plate. An alternator for the 1992 Sentra usually costs around $120-150, and a starter in the range of $90-120.

Why doesnt starter engage on 1996 Saturn?

What do you mean when you say it doesn't engage? Is the starter spinning but just doesn't catch to spin the engine? IF that's the case it could be as simple as a loose starter or as bad as a damaged flex plate/flywheel. But it would most likely be the starter.

Will a bad flywheel cause a car to not turn over?

A bad flywheel can definitely cause the engine not to turn over. The flywheel has teeth. If the teeth are chipped or broken, then the starter can not engage to spin the engine over.

Where is your starter motor in your car?

It depends on the car as it can be located on either side of the engines in different makes. The starter motor can be found lower on the back side of the engine where the engine and transmission meet. The starter needs to engage the flywheel which is where the transmission mounts.

What are three tasks which are preformed by the flywheel?

Stores kinetic energy while spinning,Smooths engine performance, Holds ring gear for the starter to engage.

Where is the flywheel located on a camaro z28?

On the back of the engine, mounted between the engine and transmission, inside the bell housing. You cannot see the flywheel. On a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme why won't the engine start It isn't the battery or the starter you thought maybe it was the flywheel however you just wanted some other opinions Please help?

If the engine will not turn over, it is either the battery or the starter. Turn on the headlights and then have someone try to start the vehicle while you look at the headlights. If the lights go dim, the battery is bad. If they do not, you have a problem with the starter. Remove the starter and have it tested. The flywheel would only be the problem if you hear the starter engage and spin. That can be a broken tooth on the flywheel, or a bad starter drive gear. If the starter does not engage at all and you hear no click, you may have a bad ignition switch.

After changing a 350 engine to a 305 will i have to change the flywheel or the starter because the 350 flywheel is bigger then the 305's?

A small flywheel needs to stay with the starter that goes to it. You can use either flywheel, and the block should be drilled for either starter.

Why doesn't my starter engage?

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter.

How many teeth on ring gear of 4g54 engine?

The Mitsubishi 4G54 engine uses a flywheel with a ring gear that has 131 teeth. This ring gear is essential for the starter motor to engage and crank the engine during starting.

Where is the starter on a 1984 cressida?

Seek around the flywheel, The Flywheel is between engine and transmission. The starter is probably under the intake like the 7MGE.

What does an automobile starter do?

Besides the smart alec answer "start an automobile", a starter has a small gear, that will both extend as well as rotate when the key is turned. This gear will engage teeth on the flywheel/flexplate, which is bolted to the rear of the crankshaft. As the starter turns, the engine will be turned.
