in about 50% of cases the symptoms of gout starts in the joint at the base of the big toe. Eventually, however 90 percent of the people that have gout will end up with inflammation in this joint. Joints such as the mid foot, ankle, heel, and knee are also often affected. The fingers, wrists, and elbows are less prone to be effected by this disease.

In time people that have gout can develop tophi. These are lumps that grow around crystal deposits in joints or near pressure points. Tophi most often occur in the fingers, wrists, ears, knees, elbows, forearms, and heels. Tophi can also grow in the kidneys, heart, and eyes.
