It probably needs very little adjustment. I think if it was my car, at the filler lid end, I would knock that end in just a bit. Use something to get on the housing or on the metal around where the plunger comes through and give it a tap or two. You could file down the end of the plunger also as long as you keep the same taper on the end.

-I tried knocking the filler lid end a little bit but didn't help. I used a little wd40 to clean out any dirt - didn't help.

This doesn't make sense to me but it seems like the spring inside the plunger has gotten stiffer or somehow the cable has gotton weaker in pulling. I came to this conclusion because:

1. If i press the release button from near drivers seat, the mechanism/plunger goes in slightly at the lid. (lets say halfway in)

2. If I press the release button while pressing the plunger halfway in, it still goes in further a little bit...
