Also, one needs to know the finish of the cabinets - were they painted, stained, varnished, natural, etc.

If you want the furniture to actually be white, you can certainly cover any stain with white paint. It is possible to get a paint specifically made with dense pigmentation, to cover other colors more effectively, but it is also possible to use multiple coats of paint until you get the desired result. If you want to change from one stain to another, rather than just covering up the old stain, you can sand the wood down to remove the outer layer, then re-stain. This is much more work, but it may be what you have in mind.

Clean with TSP, and then clean with clean water. Allow to dry overnight, and then scuff sand with 220 if the finish is in good shape. Use top-of-the-line paint products from one singular company - in other words, products that are designed to work together.

Don't forget to buy a good brush and to keep it clean between coats.

The first step in painting kitchen cabinets is to decide on the right color of paint. The paint should be chosen based on a variety of factors including price and type of paint. A person should then apply paint primer to the kitchen cabinets before painting. After the primer is applied, a person should use a paint roller to evenly coat the kitchen cabinets in paint.

'White wash' (with or without tallow being added) is for walls. You need to strip the cabinet to bare wood, then paint on a primer layer, then one or two top coats of gloss or matt paint.
