Earthquakes may have both positive and negative effects on many things.

When an exciting event occurs, there is a valuable window of opportunity to educate people as to the hazards, and the good and bad behaviors. Before, during, and after.

For example, with a tsunami, we may be educated as to the causes of these, the immediate precursors, and escape techniques.

Earthquakes are not predictable, except that in some places they are guaranteed to occur. Such as New Zealand. In this case, study the advice of how to prepare for an earthquake, how to behave during an earthquake, and what to do after.

Of course, if your school has been damaged in a quake, then schooling will be disturbed for a few days, and alternate arrangements may have to be made.

Your most important preparations include fastening all furniture that could topple or move. An escape kit is necessary, with adequate water, food, and first aid, and perhaps some temporary shelter. Advice on these preparations is available on your country's Geological Survey website.

To these, I'd recommend always having your slippers beside your bed, for there may be much broken glass round. Stout gardening gloves are an item that will help in moving rubble, and will protect your hands.

Both at school and at home you should have an agreed assembly point in the event of fire, tsunami, earthquake etc. Practice assembling there.
