Congas are the tall slender bongos which are a percussion instrument or drum as most people refer to them. Congas are played with the hands by shaping ones hands slightly differently they can make different sounds.

Bongos can be played with either sticks (usually closer to thickness to a dowel than to an actual drumstick) or with the hands. Traditionally you will see bongos played with the actual hand. They are similar to other hand drums such as congas, however you cannot produce much of a "bass stroke" on bongos since they are tuned so high. You can definitely produce a slap sound and open tone, however. When striking the drum with the hand, the bass of the fingers strikes near the rim of the drum while that fingers come down similar to a whip, striking the drum head.

There are no universally accepted pitches, scales or intervals used when tuning congas. Each player finds his or her own signature "sound" by listening to the ways more experienced conga drummers tune their instruments (take the time and effort to train your ears to really hear and recognize the sounds) and by exploring the nature of the instrument (by playing it and experimenting with it's tuning). Some players, especially experienced recording percussionists, do tune to specific pitches or key centers (either by ear or using an electronic tuner) and intervals (often combinations of 3rds, 4ths, or even 5ths). But even they have their own favorites. The main goal, though, is to create a "sound" that is true to the nature of the instrument when played using traditional techniques and that work musically within the context in which it is used.

There are, however, some basic procedures and concepts followed by many experienced conga players and recommended by leading manufacturers:

1. Tune congas and bongos in a circular movement around the head. It doesn't matter if you go clockwise or counter clockwise as long as you continue in the same direction as you started.

2. Tune each lug to the same pitch so the drums is in tune with itself. Again, learn to listen to and recognize the sounds.

3. Tune each drum to the note that produces the longest sustain when hitting an open tone and eliminates as much of the overtone ring (the high-pitched, "metallic" sound) as possible. Explore each drum's "nature", it's best and worst pitches.

4. Tune up or down in small to moderate increments.

5. Tune the drum down when finished playing for the day. This greatly extends the life of the head, helps prevent the drum from going out of round and allows you to tune your drum up every time you play so that you get to know it even better.

Playing an instrument, such as a conga drum, is fun whether you are musically inclined or not. Aside from that, conga drums are also easy to play. Beginners who would like to try playing conga drums won’t have a hard time learning it, because it is easier to pick up than most other instruments. You can easily become a conga master through constant practice and listening to other conga drum players, or listening to the radio. If you want to learn how to play the conga drum, here are some helpful tips for you.

• Try to play a simple beat. When you are just a beginner, don’t expect too much from yourself by trying complex beats. You’re better off starting with simple beats and constantly practicing those beats. If you are playing with one conga drum, use your palm and strike the center of the drum firmly, while leaving it on the surface of the drum so that a bass tone will be produced. For two or more congas, bass notes can be produced on other conga drums with a higher pitch.

• To produce different tones, experiment with different techniques. Tones which can be played in conga drums include bass tones, open tones, slap, heel-toes, muted slap and rim shots. Once you have learned these different tones, they can be perfect additions to your talent.

• Try playing the open tone. To play the open tone, you need to strike the conga drum between the rim and the center while allowing your hand to bounce off the head and allow the tone to ring slightly.

• Try playing the slap tone. You can play the slap tone using your fingers to strike the conga drum. Slaps are done to the same area as the open tone, but can also be slightly closer to the rim.

Normally, you would experience sore fingers from playing the conga drum. You can use medical tape or a bandage in order to protect your fingers. Playing drums can relieve stress, but you also need to take a rest in case you get tired from playing.
