Physical erosion by grit entrained in a watercourse will wear away the rock it meets. This why stream boulders typically have a somewhat rounded form.

Chemical weathering occurs when water on the surface of the rock dissolves some of the minerals in the rock matrix. Sometimes, this water solution then dries and the dissolved material crystallizes out in small crevices on the surface of the rock. These crystals may then mechanically disrupt the shape of the crevice as they grow.

Also, if the rock is subject to freeze-thaw cycles, the thermal expansion of the ice may further disrupt the rock fabric.
