Make another set of keys. Or just tell them that you accidently lost your extra set. * It might be wise to consider the issue of security, regardless of how remote the possiblity might be of someone being able to use them. The best option would be to tell the landlord what has happened and pay for the locks to be changed and the extra set of new keys.

How can you get out of your apartment lease if you are on section 8 housing?

You can break a lease many ways by not living up to your end of the bargain. I believe your real question is how do you avoid the consequences of breaking your lease when you need to move before the lease expires? The answer to this question is it depends. The terms of your lease, your state's landlord-tenant laws and your relationship with your landlord contribute to the severity of the consequences, ranging from no penalty to being held responsible for the remainder of the lease plus attorneys' fees and court costs. Read your lease (if you haven't done so before, this is a good time to get to know the fine print). You may find a clause that tells you exactly under what circumstances you can terminate your lease early and what the costs may be. Alternatively, speak with your landlord. You may be surprised to learn that your landlord might be willing to give you up as a tenant, so that they can relet the property at a higher rent. This is particularly the case in areas where property values and/or rent have skyrocketed. Lastly, this is not legal advice. Please consult your legal and/or tax professionals, as the outcome of each case is determined by the facts and laws of each jurisdiction. Only a professional licensed in your jurisdiction is qualified to provide you with specific advice about your circumstances.

If someone lives in an apartment and is not on the lease is he responsible for rent?

Legally speaking, he does NOT have to pay rent. The courts will see him as a visitor (legal term: transient). Even if he is added to an existing lease, both parties are responsible for paying the rent by the agreed upon due date to avoid eviction. No sense in having this freeloader drag you down. Just change the locks. Good luck! If he's living in your apartment, you certainly have the right to request that he pay or get out.

Once you rent a single family residence and have a one year lease is it your right to change the locks on the house or should you ask for the landlord's permission?

You should ask the landlords permission for anything permanant that you do to his house. To avoid problems, read lease, check with landlord. Your lease probably has a clause about the landlord having the right to make "emergency" inspecitons, even if you aren't there. As a locksmith, I've never dealt with a landlord who didn't want a key to his house. As long as the landlord doesn't have to pay for it, most don't care if you change the locks as long as the quality isn't less than he had and he gets a key. As for changing the locks, do you mean instaling ew locks or rekeying the existing ones? If the lock is ok, it's a lot cheaper to have the key combination changed than buy new locks. Go back to the lease contract. Anything not specifically discussed in the lease contract is open for discussion. --------------------------------------------------------------- I too am a Locksmith (ALOA) and forget anything in any contract that says that the landlord must have a key. You, as a renter, are entitled to complete privacy rights. This means that you do not have to allow entry to the landlord without his or her prior notification as to a specific time and day. BUT.............If the landlord does not have a key and there arises a problem that could have been counteracted or lessened if the landlord could gain immediate entry (a burst water heater for example), you COULD be held liable. This would become a CIVIL Court case and you would still probably win. To sum it up....The landlord has NO right to enter your rented space. The landlord does NOT have the right to allow entry of the Police without your consent. This may vary in some states but as a rule of thumb privacy rights are universal. Y-THINK-Y

How long does a landlord have to return a security deposit in nyc?

The amount of time a landlord has to sue for damages will vary by state and the type of California. In California, for example, you have 4 years to make a claim on a written contract, and 3 years to file for property damage. A claim for unpaid rent on a written rental agreement is 4 years. Property damage might be 3 years from the date you moved out. The laws of your state may be different.

What is a bachelor apartment?

I would like to say that it is the one bedroom apartment with all necessary things. A bachelor apartment is one that combines the bedroom, living room and kitchen in the one room unit. Although small in size, it's a good choice for someone who wants to avoid room mates and save money while living in a city or town. But many bachelor apartments share a basic layout: the single room combines the living room, kitchen and sleeping area. In some bachelor apartments, the kitchen may have a window partition to separate it partly from the rest of the room, but kitchen is common for two rooms in a bachelor apartment.

How do you avoid an eviction notice from your apartment?

To avoid eviction, you need to follow the terms of your contract: pay your rent in full on time, maintain the apartment as described (no excessive damage, no painting or hanging of pictures if prohibited, etc.), be a good neighbor (keep the noise down, don't make a nuisance of yourself) and keep in contact as needed with the landlord. Evictions are commonly issued for ongoing failure to pay rent, failure to adhere to the contractual terms (such as getting a large dog when dogs are not allowed or having another roommate move in without notice to the landlord), excessive damage (such as ripping up all the carpet or having cat pee all over the unit) or being a disruption to the living conditions to neighbors (such as having large parties late into the nights).

Preparing an Apartment Rental Lease?

Anyone who has thought about buying a duplex or small apartment building and renting out one or more units should have a proper apartment rental lease. If you do not have much experience as a landlord, it is vitally important to have a comprehensive lease that covers all possible contingencies that may occur during the life of the lease. While you can get a standard lease form at an office supply store or by downloading one online for a few dollars, it may not be adequate for your particular situation. You can avoid all sorts of problems by spending a little more and having an attorney prepare an iron-clad apartment rental lease that will protect your interest in the property as an owner and landlord.
