Contacting magazines may be a bit of an effort and they probably won't have a clue themselves- believing they are the ones who 'do things differently.'
Whatever your result, it will will not be a definitive one as there are too many variables surrounding the matter of just 'magazines.' It is too general a question for that.
I would suggest that you started small, obtaining a few magazines that share the same focus- beauty, videogames, movies and gossip for example. Analyse and summarise the patterns for that subject area then move on to the next one. Follow this routine until you feel satisfied that your investigation has discovered all that it has needed to. Publish your findings. Done.
