Donato di Betto Bardi was the greatest of the early Tuscan sculptors and is regarded as the founder of modern sculpture. He produced statues complete and independent in themselves and not merely part of a building or structure. His works are found in the church of San Michele, the tombs of Pope John XXIII, the Cardinal Brancacci in Naples and Bartolomeo Aragazzi at Montepulciano. In Florence his marble basreliefs are now in the Bargello Museum .
Donatello's epitaph was written by the Italian poet and humanist, Giorgio Vasari. In his work "Le Vite dei più eccellenti pittori, scultori, ed architetti," published in 1550, Vasari praised Donatello's contributions to art and sculpture, highlighting his innovative techniques and mastery. The epitaph reflects Donatello's significant influence on the Renaissance and his enduring legacy in the world of art.
