How did Joseph's McCarthy career end?

With his popularity on the decline the U.S. Senate saw an opening and began herrings to censure McCarthy on 46 accounts. After two months the herring ended with two accounts being censured. These censures made it impossible for McCarthy to hold any seats in committees and condemned what he has done on those two accounts.

From then on McCarthy was no longer of much interest. His speeches were barely attended or just ignored by his fellow senators; the news media no longer broadcast his every word.

On May 2, 1957 McCarthy died at age 48 from inflammation of the liver; the press hinted at Alcoholism as the cause. His death marked the end of his career as well as the end of strong armed anti-communists from the state of Wisconsin that elected a Democrat that denounced McCarthy to his now vacant senate seat.

Basically, he went far enough to discredit himself. Joseph McCarthy was a perfect example of the type of person who pulls out enough rope that they eventually hang themselves with it. His accusations became increasingly more ridiculous until finally, he accused the United States Army of being a "Communist front", and his goose was cooked from that time on.

He became discredited in 1954 as a result of the Army - McCarthy hearings, in which he was found to have been guilty of corruption and coercion, and also as a result of the suicide of Democratic Senator for Wyoming Lester C. Hunt in the December of that year, whom McCarthy had cruelly tried to blackmail into resigning his office because Hunt's son was a homosexual, which in those days was illegal. McCarthy threatened to have the son prosecuted and imprisoned unless Hunt resigned- Hunt refused, McCarthy went ahead with his threat, and the son was duly sent to prison. Hunt killed himself in his Senate office. The Army - McCarthy hearings were widely televised, and resulted in many Americans becoming disillusioned with him as being a power-crazed demagogue. As a result of both these cases, he was censured in the Senate in December 1954 by a vote of 67 - 22, making him one of the few US Senators ever to be disciplined in this fashion. Although he continued as a Senator for the next 2 and a half years, his credibility was in tatters- fellow Senators avoided him, his speeches were delivered to a near-empty Chamber, and President Eisenhower made no secret of his dislike of the man, sometimes making jokes about him. The press ignored him, and both the US Government and the public alike wondered how it was that they could have allowed themselves to be intimidated by somebody who was, in effect, a nascent dictator. He became a shadow of his former self, and the last 6 months of his life were spent by repeated terms in hospital due to cirrhosis of the liver caused by alcoholism. He died of hepatitis in Bethesda Naval Hospital on 2nd May 1957 at the age of only 48, although he looked older than he was- his death was greeted with universal relief.
