Leonardo da vinci was provided with the resources and the trust of his patron Cesare Borgia so he was able to ideate and engineer machines that made it possible for him to measure the territory in a significantly short ammount of time and with little need of assistance. He created a circle with center in the heart to of the city of Imola, and with the north/south east/west organization for the Y and X coordinates, created a radial system of reference that reduced the circle into a four quadrant system, making the measuring more manageable by breaking it down into 4 smaller pieces. Within the circle he included the river which sustained the city physically and economically among other ways. It is believed that one of the ideas for the use of this document was to ideate a way of drying up and change the course of the river from reaching into the region and therefore starving, devastating and force it's military into surrender upon an invasion by the troops of Cesare Borgia. It also provided with a detail plan of the streets, public spaces and alleys, and above all, the main entrances to the city, making this map a sophisticated tool for military strategy.
What has survived is guarded preciously. For example, the Mona Lisa is on display at the Louvre but must be protected under a certain light and no flash pictures of it can be taken. His very accurate map of Imola, created for Cesare Borgia, stills exists, as do his journals and his many studies of human anatomy, paintings and inventions.

You can visit Leonardo da vinvi house. Even though he was born in Vinci the house is not really in Vinci but about 3 km north, at Anchiano. There is no admission charge and only one panel in English. The road up is quit adventurous and the house is situated completely surrounded by olive trees. A nice spot. The landscape surrounding the house is still very similar to the one Leonardo had contemplated and drawn since childhood. That is why it was decided, during the repairs, to decorate the house with examples of how Leonardo was able to "see" and interpret nature. Inside the house are the reproductions of several drawings representing views of the Tuscan countryside and a map of the Arno valley, traced by Leonardo himself.
