Wolverine is called "Wolverine" in The X-Man movies because of his razor sharp claws like a Wolverine. Just in case a you don't know what a wolverine is, a wolverine is commenly known as a Gulo-Gulo, and is an animal (Carnivore) that lives in forest-kind-of lands.
-Actually the way that Wolverine accounts it is that after his departure from the Howlett manor and his venture into British Columbia, Canada is where he earned his nickname. The residents gave him this nickname because of his intense digging while on the job. This was before he revealed his mutation and was based on his manual labor as opposed to his hidden claws.
Wolverine was originally named James Howlett, born in Northern Alberta, Canada in the 1880's to Elizabeth Howlett, the wife of wealthy farmer John Howlett. James' biological father, Thomas Logan, later kills John, and is killed in turn by an enraged adolescent James with his newly manifested bone claws. Elizabeth throws James off the property, and he runs away to a mining colony in the Yukon.
James abopts the name Logan there.
After WWI and several other lifetimes, Logan eventually becomes an Intel agent for the Canadian government under Department H, where he adopts the name Wolverine.
because his love Kayla told him a story about the moon and one of the characters names was wolverine.(watch the movie)
