What did Sparta fail to develop that would have helped their trade?

Sparta failed to develop a strong naval fleet, which hindered their ability to enhance trade through maritime routes. Unlike other city-states like Athens, Sparta's focus on land-based military prowess limited their engagement in seafaring commerce. Additionally, their rigid social structure and emphasis on self-sufficiency discouraged the pursuit of trade relationships and economic diversification. This lack of a robust trading network ultimately restricted Sparta's economic growth and access to resources.

How did Sparta trade?

Unlike Athens who depended on trade, Sparta's economy depended on farming and taking control of the neighboring city-states. Sparta's environment couldn't take care of all of it citizens. In order to survive the Spartans had to take control of the neighboring city-states for the rich and fertilized soil. The people the Spartans caught after a raid were turned into slaves.Spartans had the slaves and noncitizens produce the goods they needed. Noncitizens were not slaves they were freemen. If they needed to, they were able to serve in the Spartan military. Noncitizens could not participate in the government. Noncitizens made products for money like shoes, red cloaks for the soldiers, iron tools like knives and spears, and pottery. Noncitizens also operated trade. They traded for the goods Sparta needed to survive. Spartans discouraged trade because of the fear of new ideas that would breakdown their government. Also trade wasn't easy for Sparta. Their money was iron rods not coins like some other city-states.

Did Athens or Sparta had more shipbuilders?

Athens had more shipbuilders compared to Sparta, largely due to its powerful navy and emphasis on maritime trade. The Athenian economy and military strategy relied heavily on a strong fleet, leading to a thriving shipbuilding industry. In contrast, Sparta focused primarily on land-based military strength and did not prioritize naval capabilities, resulting in fewer shipbuilders.
