Leonardo was born an illegimate son of a wealthy man and grew up not accepted by society because of his status. No uncle helped him nor influenced him. At 16 his father gets him an apprenticeship in a artist workshop. He finishes his apprenticeship at age 20, but stays with the workshop and joins the artist guild. His surroundings in 15th century Florence is a time of violence and death. The ruling family's the Medici and Prizzi are struggling for power and Leonardo lives through the invasion of Florence by Naples. In the terrible aftermath Leonardo begins to create models of defensive weapons to help protect Florence. His first commission also comes at this time The Adoration of Christ, but he never finishes the work. He was more interested in the natural world and mechanical world and only painted when he had a cash flow problem.
