Row housing, or terraces as they are sometimes called, save space because there is no space between occupancies. And indeed the boundary wall of one occupancy is the boundary wall of the adjacent occupancy, thus saving much material.

I guess they were cheap.. small for a city family. Although i live in one and i hate the tightieniss
