It started around the time of Andrew Jackson as a group that wanted the states to have fewer rights and the government to have more control. Now it has become less democratic and more liberal, in some cases advocating outright communist policies and regulating the economy to death.(that's why there is so little business growth)

They banded together to protect the common good of the whole country and its people, rather than the selfish interests of the few. Many in government were so self-consumed with power that they would, by today's standards, be considered to be psychopaths; without empathy towards their fellow citizen.

If the party had not split, we wouldn't have had Abraham Lincoln as our 16th president.
