Security is much tighter then in those periods. Today we have far more rules governing what can and can not go on to planes used for commercial purposes (part 121).
Most laws are helpful, others are merely there to give TSA agents something to do. Apparently soda can cause a serious threat to national security when purchased outside the airport but they are safe when over charged for the same item.
