Well there are warnings if there are earthquakes coming but not by humans by animals. Animals have very sharp senses, so if there was danger your animals will act crazy so you should keep an eye on your animals. Also i recommend you to have a pet. (NOT A LAZY ONE!)

What is the warning system for earthquake?

Earthquakes are typically monitored and warned using seismometers and seismic networks that detect ground motion. These warnings give individuals and organizations a few seconds to minutes to take protective actions.

Were there any warnings about the 2007 Gisborne earthquake in New Zealand in 2007?

It is not possible to issue warnings about earthquakes at present as they cannot be predicted with current knowledge. It is hoped that in the future, warnings will be able to be issued for some types of earthquakes that have foreshocks (smaller earthquakes that happen before the major quake). There is no mention of foreshocks for the Gisborne 2007 quake on the Geonet website. There were aftershocks. See the related links.
