First of all, it depends on where the epicenter and focus of it are located. The closer it is to you, the more damage it will cause. Take the Japan earthquake for example! The Japanese knew they were sitting directly on the edge of the ring of fire, (a.k.a. the spot with the most seismic activity,) so they built their homes to withstand the force of earthquakes! (It was the Tsunami that got them!)

Firstly by killing and injuring them , then by destroying their homes and their places of employment. In areas hit by large earthquakes it takes years for the region to recover properly
