1. Determine which sort of spiral you wish to draw.- Clockwise or Anticlockwise. 2. Wind a long string around a pillar box /telegraph pole / lampost /etc in the appropriate sense 3. Tie your pencil to the end. 4. Apply paper underfoot. 5. Press pencil to paper and walk away allowing string to unwind while keeping it taut. 6. Repeat using longer string and wider/ narrower post as required.

A nautilus is a special kind of spiral that exhibits the fibonacci sequence. The best way to draw it is by first creating a series of square guides and then drawing curves within the squares.Square Guides: Start with a small square with a side length of 1cm. (this is the starting square and will be the only square that doesn't contain a curve)Draw another square with side length 1cm to the right of this square, sharing a side.Next draw a square below your drawing with side length of 2cm. The top side of this new square should be completely flush with the bottom of the first two squares.Next draw a square to the left of your drawing with side length 3. The right side of this new square should be completely flush with the left side of your drawing.Next draw a square above your drawing with side length 5. The bottom of this new square should be completely flush with the top of your drawing.at this point you should notice two patterns:the sides lengths of these squares follow the fibonacci sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5...the squares are placed in a spiral pattern: right, bottom, left, top, right, bottom...Curves:The first curve will be drawn in the second square (remember, the starting square will not contain a curve). Start at the top vertex of the side shared by the two starting squares. Draw a curve from that vertex to the one diagonal to it.Don't pick up your pencil. This is the starting point for the curve in the next square. Draw a curve from this vertex to the one diagonal to it. Continue in this way until you've drawn the entire nautilus.
