Well, I would try drawing the face that you want on with a permanant marker like a Sharpie, and then use some pumpkin carving tools because they work really well and you can usually buy them at local convienient stores like Wal-Mart. If you don't have those, you can use a knife, and it is kinda fun to try out the different types of knifes to see which one cuts the best for what you are going for.
