Some symptoms of a blown head gasket are white smoke out the exhaust, using coolant, blue smoke out exhaust, using alot of oil, running crappy and overall sputtering. Otherwise checking cylinder compression would also indicate this.
1st Is there bubbling in the coolant reservoir?
2nd Is one or more of the spark plugs much cleaner than the rest?
3rd Is there a black residue in the reservoir tank
4th Is the compression low on one or more cylinders?
5th Have the vehicle tested, most auto repair shops including my favorite radiator shop has a device that will measure the amount of exhaust coming through the cooling system.
6th Is there a visible coolant leak from the cylinder head?
7 and final thing, Remove the head and examine the gasket, BE CAREFUL often what people think is a head gasket is actually a gasket leak from another component like an intake manifold

The white smoke means coolant being burned. So the chances that its a head gasket problem are pretty high.
