Approximately 1.2 million volunteers were involved in relief efforts during the first three months following the earthquake. Earthquakes are caused by faulting, a sudden lateral or vertical movement of rock along the break of the surface - because of plate tectonics. The idea behind plate tectonics is that the surface of the Earth is broken up into 'plates', and those plates are constantly shifting against each other. In this way, earthquakes occur.

They are measured on a seismogram using the Richter scale, measuring the amplitude of the largest seismic wave recorded for the earthquake, going from 1 (the smallest), to any number above (but never been more than 9.5) Fortunately for us, most earthquakes are below 2.5 - too small for us to feel.
