Warts are caused by a virus, specifically the human papillomavirus. This virus infects your skin, specifically your dermis. This it does by entering through cuts and 'microcuts', submicroscopic cuts that let in pathogens. So touching a wart or a surface that has been touched by warty material lets in infection and makes you get warts.

Common warts are small harmless growths in the skin that are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. They often affect just one part of the body, such as the hands or feet, without spreading to other areas.

Common warts usually occur when that part of your skin is damaged in any way. For example, imagine having a cut on your leg and then next day a wart has taken it's place!
