you hook the positive cable,(usually the red) to the positive battery terminal first
then you hook the negative cable(usually black) to the negative terminal
if you hook it the other way you can get sparks or arcing that can cause damage or a fire
PS: if both cables are same color, the negative cable is the one bolted to the frame or the engine.the poitive is bolted to the solenoid or starter
if it tries to start with out a keu when you hook up the jumper cables, you have a bad starter solenoid.
Hook up a battery charger to it.
if you put jumper cables on the wrong way you WILL kill the battery then if you leave them on you will cause the battery to overheat and swell then will u least expect it, it will blow up.. it will be a miniature hydrogen bomb

If it is a twelve volt system then you probably need to hook up two jumper cables one to each if it is really dead. if not just hook up the battery on the driver side.
