Step 1 -It begins with choosing good graphic design software. The Corel and Adobe Suites are industry standards, but there are free alternatives such as The Gimp, Inkscape, and many others. For posters, a program that can edit both vectors and rasters (bitmaps) is ideal.
Step 2 - Collect all the necessary information including: the event name, place, time, price, contact info, and any other information that is important. It often helps to prioritize and rank each piece of information, which will come in helpful in the layout stage.
Step 3 - Brainstorm a great headline and accompanying image. The goal is to capture the casual viewer's interest, and draw them into your poster. For this reason, it is useful to use 50%-75% of your poster's space to promote the "hook" (the headline and image). Choose colors and shapes that compliment the mood you're trying to evoke. *This is the step that defines and shapes the entire poster.
Step 4 - Use the rest of your space to accommodate your important information. Use the ranking system from step 2 to determine what size and how much contrast each element will have. Keep consistent alignment, and make sure your layout "breathes" (has adequate space between elements). Remember: If you make everything stand out, nothing stands out.
Step 5 - Print it out on your printer, or make a PDF, TIFF or JPG (shudder) and bring it to your local print shop. If you want your poster to be trimmed right to the edge of the image ("full bleed"), you'll need to design at least 1/8" of extra "bleed" that can be cut off without affecting your design. This ensures that you don't end up with ugly white hairlines on some of the edges of your poster when a large cutter is used.
