To crochet a shell stitch you will be making a series of double or treble stitches, which will be joined at the top, but not the bottom. A common number of stitches used to make the shell would be five, however if only two stitches are joined, that would be referred to as a decrease, and doesn't really qualify as a shell stitch.

I have attached some links to video tutorials to show you how to make shell stitches.

Define the crochet term working around For example Working around next 4 ch-5 spaces and next slip st?

Its not possible to work around a crochet space because a space has nothing in it. However it is possible to work around a crochet stitch such as the post of the actual crochet stitch. You can work a crochet slip stitch over the top of crochet chains and stitches to get to another place in your crochet piece. You can also work crochet stitches around the post of a stitch. The term working around the space does not make any sense and is not good language for describing written instructions.

How do you make your crochet straighten out instead of being so curly?

Narrow bands of crochet always have a tendency to curl up, it's the nature of the stitches and the yarn used. In order for it to straighten out you will have to make the object wider, or add more rows of crochet on to your original chain. It should start to curl up less and less the more rows you make.

After a quick scan of the relatedlink (listed below), I am understanding that a shell of single crochet stitches means that a shell pattern can be made by knotting a single stitch, then skipping two stitches, then making 5 double crochets in the next stitch. Then you would skip the next two stitches and start another shell by one stitch, skip two, make 5 doubles, skip two stitches, and start another. And so on.
